Fixed Income Living-Semi Retired As an Alternative Lifestyle

Semi Retired. Working Retirement. The New Retirement.  These are words and phrases that get bandied around right and left.  The implication is that they refer to those folks who’ve retired, but chosen, for whatever reason, to work and/or start a business.  We can’t call it full retirement, after all it’s semi retired. That’s the leave your cares behind, cruise around the world, spend the day on the golf course retirement.

SEMI RETIRED

I’m sure that full retirement is a lovely lifestyle, and one that I imagine I’ll reach someday.  Meanwhile though, I’m enjoying my current lifestyle as a semi retired as are many other “semi”  retirees.  Not only that, I tend to think that for many people this is an alternative lifestyle that can be incorporated, or partly incorporated, earlier in life.  Why wait until “retirement” to more to this place, this way of living.

My lifestyle is one that, for lack of  better phraseology, tends to flow. Rather than having a designated “work” time and a designated “relaxation” time,  one activty tens to merge with another throughout my day. and I’m not just talking day to day here.  It occurs to me that much of the same was true during my vacation as well.

This morning, I had a long relaxing drink on the patio before it became too hot (and bemoaned my over heated tomatoes). I had an enjoyable breakfast, and then slowly moved to my desk. I checked emails (personal and business). I did some random surfing, as well as checking out discounts and seeing what books had sold and printing out address lable. In other words, business was pleasure and vice versa.

I wandered to my sewing room and sewed two items (one a sale from my craft store and one personal use and enjoyment). Before lunch, I grabbed my new Don Winslow book and went out side to read.  I’ll say here that Don Winslow is the author everyone really should read -he has a true following, three books scheduled to be movies (one an Oliver Stone Flick) and no one but the faithful know who he is.  In other words, the parts of my life generally intermingle. Atmittedly, this is the way I like it.

The same type of flow is evident when I travel. While I certainly would not consider my vacations busman’s holidays (and make every effort to be much less “connected”), the nature of the beast is such that stuff intermingles.  Like many retirees and self employed folks, my business/income streams are based on interests and hobbies.  Depnding on the city I visit, I like nothing more than visiting the local flea market.  While the day is pure enjoyment for me, theres no doubt  that hitting the book stall for rare books is both business and pleaseure.  And writing and photography enter in the this picture as naturally as it can be.

To me it seems that life is more whole or circular, if you will.  My daughter would probably call it more “organic”.  Even though I still work (and need to work), volunteer, and do many at home retiree things, they don’t all live in separate little pockets, or separate time periods of my life.  Some may say that they prefer those pockets-that home should be home, and work should be in the office building. At some level, I see their point.  It’s just that for me, life is much more enjoyable when it’s on my terms. Even on a fixed income, life is still on my terms.

Whatever you call this time in life, I like it. It seems to be to be a happy medium between spending every day at the beach (not that that’s a bad thing..) and continuing in the traditional working world for another (blank) number of years.  Everyone has to make their own terms, and for now I’ll stay right where I am thanks, fixed income and all.
